Value Angle

PROS

  • Searching for winners in the 4/1-50/1 price range away from the front of the market

Top 5 Horse Racing Betting Tips

The bettingexpert Daily Nap has developed a great following since launch in October of 2011. With a win rate just under 40% and boasting a ROI at advertised prices of near 10%. With over 2,000 horse racing naps selected and backed so far. It’s a pretty good sample size from which to judge this free service. Here we take a behind the scenes look. We discuss the five keys to consistently finding profitable horse racing betting tips.

#1- Find a suitable race type and quickly eliminate races unsuitable for betting on

We recommend avoiding huge fields as a general rule. Especially over jumps. It is just guesswork as to how the race will be run. The margins between victory and defeat are small.

We suggest betting in lower grade races. Why? There are a few realistic contenders. It is easier to price up the contest without fear of the unknown. Novice hurdles and chases have proved particularly profitable for us. 3-y-o+ maidens on the turf and all-weather also offer excellent opportunities.

#2- Try to identify a “weak link” in the chain at the front of the market

The key to finding value is to play against a favourite that is under-priced. This might be a horse who has won all his last few races on testing ground but now faces rapidly drying conditions. Or one that was very well drawn against the favoured rail when “winning impressively” last time out.

Finding an edge that others may not be aware of is getting harder and harder. Certainly all pricing “errors” tend to be ironed out close to the off. So it is important to be able to spot these ricks early on to take advantage.

As the Daily Nap has increased in popularity there is certainly downward pressure on prices on the exchanges and with the bookmakers. As soon as the selection goes up (pre 8am) odds are cut. So it is important to shop around to try to attain the best price possible quickly.

#3- Focus on in-form smaller stables and try to avoid the big names who are often overbet

“Names” such as Paul Nicholls, Ruby Walsh or Richard Hannon and Richard Hughes have huge stables. As a result they have a huge following. They tend to plunder plenty of the top prizes. However they rarely offer much in the way of value.

It’s better to identify young, up-and-coming stables. Particularly with decent strike rates at an early stage. We look to bet with horses trained by up and coming trainers. Those trainers we think are destined for the top. Those trainers who are expert at placing their runners to win.

Identifying these stables before everyone else is a vital. Finding winners at decent prices requires looking away from the obvious.

#4- Always look for prices over “fancies” and solid reasoning as to why that price might be too big

It’s all about prices. Anybody can simply tip up favourites. However, making a profit is the goal. It’s crucial to form one’s own idea of the market before looking at the odds .

For example, a novice hurdle looks a straight match. On one hand, an unbeaten “hyped” up novice. On the other, a solid handicapper who has run with credit in midfield in some big field valuable prizes all season. Pricing it up blind the night before is key. Assuming of course that the ground will ride as forecast. We make the two favourites 11-8 (2.38) joint favourites and 12-1 (13.0) bar. Looking at the morning exchange market shows that the “name” horse is 10-11 (1.91). The other “runner” available at 9-4 (3.25). It is quite simple that the 9-4 chance has to be the best bet.

Money on the exchange is rarely wildly misplaced. However it is well worth trying to get 2-1+ about our preference. Very often the market will have corrected itself by racetime. The favourite now 5-4 (2.25) and our pick 13-8 (2.63). This is a tick in the win column already. Over time, this leads to long term profitability.

#5- Try to work out how a race will be run and make sure it will suit our selection

The shape of the race is very important. Particularly over jumps. But it is often overlooked by people putting up horses. We like to play in races where we think there will be a pace duel on the lead. Several horses wanting to front-run and dominate. In soft ground especially, this can lead to stayers being dragged in from rear as the leaders tire.

We can also play the flip side of this. Seemingly “impressive” winners can often be extremely flattered visually when the leaders go off too hard. They should be opposed next time out. Take the Cheltenham Festival for example. Year after year the horses who run well at the meeting do so again. Often benefiting from very fast run, big field races that they do not encounter for the rest of the season at this uniquely undulating course.
