Grand National Day 2 Tips 2021 - Predictions & Races

Day 2 is Ladies Day at Aintree, with most of Liverpool traditionally enjoying a day out in the spring sunshine. 2021 seems sure to be a completely different feel on course, with the global pandemic meaning crowd numbers are likely to be very limited and perhaps restricted to just owners of the horses running.

There are two Grade 1’s to get stuck into and the concluding Grade 3 champion bumper is always a great chance for spotting future stars in the game at an early stage of their careers (and test the merits of the Cheltenham runners who seem sure to make up plenty of the runners). Friday begins with a huge field Grade 3 handicap hurdle that is always something of a punters minefield, with a maximum field on the cards and rapidly drying ground conditions meaning the soft ground form of the past few months is largely irrelevant.

The second race on a high class card of jumps racing is sure to be a high class clash, with novices from Britain and Ireland locking horns at Grade 1 level over two miles, while the Topham handicap chase at 4.05 is a chance to see the Grand National fences in action in a red hot handicap.

Race 1 – 13:45 / Orrell Park Handicap Hurdle Tips & Odds

Stephen Harris’ Orrell Park Handicap Hurdle Tip

Tip: EDWARDSTONE

Alan King’s handicapper is ideally suited by these huge field handicaps on decent ground, and he shaped really well under a patient ride in the County Hurdle at the Cheltenham festival. He comes into this in top form and his only previous run at Aintree saw him win a competitive novice hurdle in December 2019.

Tip: DUSART

Nicky Henderson’s highly regarded novice created a deep impression when winning at Newbury 155 days ago, sprinting clear hard on the bridle in the manner of a top class performer. He missed Cheltenham and comes into Aintree fresh and primed, with a good gallop on decent ground sure to suit him.

Tip: ESPOIR DE ROMAY

Kim Bailey’s novice has only tasted defeat once over fences this winter, and that came at the hands of the high class Royale Pagaille. He should relish the better ground, and his sound jumping is likely to be a real asset over these demanding fences (with a poitive ride likely from the excellent David Bass).

Race 4 – 15:25 / Marsh Steeple Chase Tips & Odds

Stephen Harris’ JLT Steeple Chase Tip

Tip: MASTER TOMMYTUCKER

Paul Nicholls 10-y-o lost no caste in defeat when finishing second to the Ascot specialist Dashel Dasher last time out, and this flat track on decent ground should suit him ideally over his optuimum trip of 2m4f. He is now a really fluent jumper despite a few mishaps in the past, and a positive ride from the front could soon have plenty of these classy performers out of their comfort zone.

Race 5 – 16:05 / Topham Steeple Chase Tips & Odds

Stephen Harris’ Topham Steeple Chase Tip

Tip: MORNING VICAR

Nicky Henderson’s chaser had excuses when a shade disappointing in the Kim Muir at the Cheltenham Festival, but he could be a different proposition on some spring ground at this flatter track.

Race 6 – 16:40 / The Doom Bar Sefton Novices’ Hurdle Tips & Odds

Stephen Harris’ The Doom Bar Sefton Novices Hurdle Tip

Tip: GALLYHILL

This strapping novice suffered a shock defeat at Ascot last time out, but that can be put down to jockey error and he remains a horse with a big future as his stamina is drawn out over this three mile trip (will make a cracking high class chaser in time).

Tip: CAMPROND

Phillip Hobbs freegoing novice posted a much imporved effort when winning at Taunton last time out, and could improve again now going handicapping from a lenient looking mark. He should settle for the first time in this big field, with the strong pace a big plus and decent ground suiting ideally.
