The Belgian Pro League is the highest level of football in Belgium. The Belgian First Division A, is more commonly known as Belgian Pro League or Jupiler Pro League due to sponsorship.
The league is oftentimes underestimated and shadowed by the top five leagues. While it is not exactly on the same level as the Big Five, it definitely deserves recognition for its quality. The Belgian Pro League is made up of 16 teams, each playing their opponents two times, once home, and once away. The season lasts between August and April.
After the regular season, where each club plays 30 games, the top six enter the Championship playoffs. The first-placed team in the playoffs wins the Championship.
So far, the most successful club in the league is Anderlecht, with an incredible 34 national titles under their belt. At the same time, they have finished as the runners-up 21 times so far.
Club Brugge KV are the second most prominent club in the league, with 18 titles so far. Similarly, they have finished second 23 times, most commonly thanks to Anderlecht.
Other prominent clubs include Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, shortened to Union SG, Standard Liege, K Beerschot VA, K.F.C. Rhodienne-De Hoek (Racing), Genk, Gent, etc. The list of clubs that have not won the championship includes some pretty sound names in the world of football.
Three clubs are relegated to the Challenger Pro League at the end of the season. At the same time, the top two clubs from the second league advance automatically. The clubs that finished from 3rd to 6th compete for the final spot.
The official start date for the Belgian Pro League is the 28th of July, 2023. The league is to end on the 26th of May 2024, when we will have the new Belgian champion.
The newest league season will change its format back to 16 clubs, compared to 18 in the previous year. Nonetheless, the number of spots in European competitions remains the same.
The first four clubs on the table enter the Championship playoffs, while places five to eight go into a Conference League Group. The Championship group clubs play each other two times.
The first two places go into the Champions League qualifier, and the third into Europa League playoffs. The fourth place of the Championship Group and first place in the Conference League Group got a place in the Europa Conference League qualifier.
Sometimes at around the same time, either the beginning of July or August, the Belgian Cup takes place. All clubs from the top leagues of national football and the Belgian Provincial League are expected to play.
The standard tournament format ensures clubs from higher levels of football can join later. The cup is important as, in addition to the cup trophy, it grants a spot in the Europa League and the Belgian Supercup.
