The LigaPro is the second tier of the Portuguese football system. Previously known as the Segunda Division and the 2. Liga, this division is home to 22 clubs who compete to earn promotion to the top flight in Portugal, the Primeira Liga.

Let’s look at how LigaPro works. There are 22 sides who compete in this divison each season. Each side plays each other twice, once at home and once away. The side finishing at the top of the table at the end of the season wins promotion to the Primeira Liga, unless the winners are the ‘B’ side of a club already competing in the top division. The side finishing in second place also wins automatic promotion to the top flight.

There are four automatic relegation spots in LigaPro. The sides finishing in the bottom four places are demoted to the third tier of Portuguese football, the Campeonato de Portugal. The sides finishing in 17th and 18th positions enter a promotion/relegation playoffs against two sides who finish as runners up in their Campeonato de Portugal groups.
