A brilliant start to the best four days of jumps racing in the calendar, and a real chance that four top quality novices from Britain and Ireland will take each other on.
The big 4 are Nicky Henderson’s pair Consitution Hill and Jonbon, alongside Willie Mullins duo Dysart Dynamo and Sir Gerhard. Ground conditions on the day are sure to have a huge bearing on the final outcome, with Constitution Hill very effective on really testing conditions, while his stablemate Jonbon is very much all speed and would prefer a faster surface ideally.
The Irish pair are entitled to maximum respect too, particularly given the clear superiority that Ireland have enjoyed at this meeting in recent years, and this will be a truly thrilling race for jumping fans to watch and learn for the future.
Nicky Henderson’s strapping type has created a deep impression in winning both starts over hurdles at Sandown so far, not off the bridle to rout Graded opposition in the Tolworth last time out. He will be extremely hard to beat if the ground rides soft on the opening day, with his main rival Jonbon much more of a speed horse who may need better ground/Aintree in the spring.
Tip stakes (out of 10): 8

The Supreme was originally known as the Gloucester Hurdle (and usually split into two or three divisions), but has evolved into one of the most eagerly awaited races of the entire four days. 2016 saw the top class Altior land a wholesale public gamble in impressive style, and this is always one of the warmest betting heats of the entire week. Irish runners tend to dominate, and Klassical Dream was a popular winner for Willie Mullins in 2019, ridden with typical confidence by the now retired Ruby Walsh. In 2021 Appreciate It routed the field to land a substantial race day gamble down to odds on, winning with the minimum of fuss under a motionless Paul Townend.
