The turn of the hunter chasers always provides a complete contrast to the preceding Gold Cup, with thrills and spills aplenty as the mixed abilities of the riders are tested over this demanding course. Previous dual champion Billaway arrives with a bit to prove now after a short priced defeat on his seasonal debut, but he usually needs that run to put him straight and seems sure to be primed for this big day as he aims to make history.
This prolific hunter has finished second in this prestigious prize in 2020 and 2021, and seems sure to be primed to be at his peak by Willie Mullins. He is a strong traveler who usually jumps soundly, and has not enjoyed the run of the race when heavily supported to land both previous runnings round here.

With under £50,000 in prize money this may be the lowest quality race of the four days, but it provides a stern test of horse and rider over 3m2f (and is always a thrilling spectacle with luck in running a huge part). It Came to Pass ran out a shock winner of a typically incident packed renewal in 2020, cheered up the hill by the bookmakers only as he gamely landed the spoils at 66/1. In 2021 William Biddick’s Porlock Bay caused another upset, and this is usually one of the hardest races to assess from a form and betting point of view.
