A punting minefield and the bookmakers currently offering “12/1 the field” and the betting interest light. Many will think the handicapper is in charge now with Dan Skelton’s Unexpected Party, after he was walloped 12lb in one hit for winning easily at Ascot in January, but he really impressed there in the way he glided round on the bridle, and could easily be a graded performer in the making (with decent ground in the spring likely to bring about more improvement for his excellent yard). Skelton certainly has a terrific record in the big handicaps at the Festival, and he does appear the standout form contender at this stage.
Dan Skelton’s rapidly progressive performer saw his mark shoot up 12lbs for winning at Ascot in January, quickening clear under a motionless Harry Skelton to dispose of a really competitive field for a valuable Saturday handicap. He looks like a graded performer in the making, and this big field and strong pace should set things up ideally for another hold up ride from last to first.

A really competitive 2m5f handicap, with a maximum field size assured and a strong pace from the tape making this a stiff test of stamina up the final hill. Nicky Henderson has done especially well in this race, winning it three times since Whisper in 2014, and the well backed Dame de Compagnie landed a wholesale gamble in the JP McManus silks in 2020 (given a masterclass from out the back by the now retired Barry Geraghty). In 2021 the small Irish trainer Paul Hennessy sprang a surprise as his Heaven Help Us gamely landed the spoils, given an inspired ride by Richie Condon.
