A competitive start to Ladies Day at the 2022 Festival, with some of the best novice hurdlers from the top yards clashing over the stamina sapping 2m5f trip (stiff test for inexperienced horses particularly at the tempo they are not used to).
This race attracted a cracking field in 2018 when Samcro landed a wholesale plunge for the legions of Irish punters who saw him as a banker for the week, and in 2019 City Island also attracted very shrewd cash before fending off Champ in a thrilling finish up the hill.
Punters were again in charge in 2020 when Gordon Elliott’s Envoi Allen stormed clear up the hill, landing a wholesale ante-post plunge down to 4/7f on the day, while 2021 saw Bob Olinger enhance his reputation to the delight of his legions of backers. The 2022 contest has a much more open look to things, with running plans of the principals up in the air and the ante-post market unusually light.
A Grade 1 Novice Chase that is extremely demanding over the three mile trip, and there have been some terrific clashes in recent history.
The 2019 renewal of this 3m Grade 1 Novice Chase produced one of the finishes of the week as Topofthegame fended off Santini and the well backed Delta Work in a cracking three way battle all the way up the hill. In 2020 Irish trainers seemed sure to dominate the finish as both Minella Indo and Allaho travelled smoothly clear on the turn for home, but the late surge of Nicky Henderson’s talented Champ was enough to foil them both in a thrilling finish.
He is now a live contender for the 2022 Stayers Hurdle later in the week, with injuries and jumping issues meaning his chasing career has been shelved. In 2021 Monkfish landed the prize for Willie Mullins, and he has a very strong hand this time around as usual.
One of the toughest handicaps of the week to solve, run over the two mile five furlong trip, with a maximum field meaning that luck in running always plays a huge part in the final outcome up the stamina sapping hill.
The pace is always very strong and they tend to get racing far too far out, meaning the complexion can change dramatically on the stiff uphill finish. Typically the layers offer at least “10/1 the field” for this wide open handicap, but in 2020 they suffered a real reverse in fortunes as the heavily backed 5/1f Dame de Compagnie came through late and fast under Barry Geraghty.
In 2021 punters struggled as the unconsidered outsider Heaven Help Us stormed clear at 33/1, unusually winning by a long looking nine lengths under Richard Condon.
The highlight of Wednesday at the Festival, with close to a quarter of a million pounds for the winner on offer as the best two mile chasers in Britain and Ireland compete for the prestigious title of “champion chaser”.
This has produced some memorable displays over the years, with legends such as Sprinter Sacre, Edredon Bleu and Moscow Flyer becoming household names after winning this pulsating contest in recent times.
In 2018 a new legend emerged as Nicky Henderson’s Altior took the prize with his typically strong finish up the hill, and he again landed hefty market confidence down to long odds-on in 2019 (despite looking beaten at halfway when coming under pressure).
In 2020 the punters had a real reversal when the red hot 4/6f Defi du Seuil trained in well beaten behind the frontrunning grey Politologue, and the 2021 renewal produced another shock as Put the Kettle On scrambled home in a blanket finish (with Chacun Pour Soi weakening tamely up the hill at 8/13f). There will be another short priced favourite to get stuck into this year, as Nicky Henderson’s Shiskin is sure to be one of the bankers of the week for punters.
A unique race at the Festival every year, run over 3m6f on the inner cross-country track and featuring the usual specialists in this division.
Usually a very quiet betting race that is seen as something of a novelty by UK punters (more popular in Ireland where they are something of a feature at all the major festivals). The last few years have had a touch of class added to them, as the prolific Tiger Roll won easily in 2018, 2019 and 2021 for Gordon Elliott (before going on to Aintree Grand National glory in April 2019).
He was turned over at 8/11f by the impressive Easyisland in 2020, and these two old rivals could have things between them again in 2022.
This cracking Grade 3 handicap over two miles is a fast and furious contest, and provides a real contrast to some of the stamina sapping graded races earlier in the day.
The pace is always contested from the tape, and very often a patient ride from the likes of Davy Russell has proved an excellent tactic. In 2019 the books got a real boilover they dream of when the unconsidered 66/1 veteran Croco Boy landed the spoils in tenacious style under Kieran Burke, outbattling the perpetual bridesmaid Bun Doran up the hill.
However, in 2020 the punters were firmly in charge when the gambled on Hidden Charge landed an almighty plunge down to 7/2f, ridden with supreme skill by the veteran Davy Russell. There was a 14/1 surprise in 2021 when Sky Pirate showed unusual resolution to land the spoils for Jonjo O’Neill, winning on the nod by the minimum margin under an inspired ride by Nick Scholfield.
The best race to watch for the future over the entire four days, with all the big yards from Britain and Ireland bringing their most exciting youngsters out to contest the best bumper of the season over two miles. Hype, whispers and reputations are on the line, with a huge field of inexperienced young horses with massive price tags to match.
This contest is fantastic to watch for the future, and always throws up top class novice hurdlers the following season. This is always a ferocious betting heat as punters play up their winnings on the day, or try to smash their way out of trouble on a very difficult “getting out stakes”.
Punters enjoyed the better of the battle in 2019 as Gordon Elliott’s Envoi Allen landed market confidence down to 2/1f, ridden to perfection by the amateur Jamie Codd to assert his superiority up the hill. Historically there have been plenty of big priced winners to line the bookmakers pockets, and in 2020 the 11/1 chance Ferny Hollow gamely landed the spoils (foiling a punt on the runner-up Appreciate It).
In 2021 Willie Mullins produced Sir Gerhard to thwart a better fancied stablemate, and is extremely likely that the big Irish yards will dominate proceedings again in 2022.
Ladies Day at the Festival will see the return of huge crowds after an eerie silence in 2021, and they will be blessed with some fiercely competitive big fields and unfathomable handicaps alongside the cross-country chase and concluding Champion bumper.
The opening Grade 1 Ballymore novice hurdle features a fascinating clash between some of the best novices in Britain and Ireland, and in 2018 the Irish banker Samcro landed an almighty plunge to the dismay of bookmakers who had seen a deluge of support both in the ante-post markets and on the day of racing. In 2021 another superstar emerged from Ireland as Henry de Bromhead’s Bob Olinger landed a wholesale plunge from the army of Irish punters, and he is set to return to the 2022 Festival over fences this time (currently unbeaten over the larger obstacles and sure to be a very short priced favourite).
The Brown Advisory Novice Chase at 2.10pm is next and this has often proved a terrific guide for future Gold Cup contenders. In 2019 we saw one of the finishes of the week as Topofthegame edged out Santini and Delta Work in a sustained three-way battle up the hill. In 2020 Champ pulled off an unbelievable success, looking beaten three out but making up ten lengths from the hometurn to lead close home, while 2021 saw Ireland dominate as Willie Mullins Monkfish ran out a very resolute winner under Paul Townend.
After the wide open Coral Cup handicap (where bookmakers regularly offer at least 10/1 the field), attention turns to the highlight of Day 2 with the Queen Mother Champion Chase. This is the ultimate test of a Grade 1 jumper at two miles, with a blistering pace and the emphasis on speed, and has produced some of the most exciting finishes up the hill over the years. In 2020 there was a major shock as the odds-on Defi du Seuil turned in a poor run, leaving the way for Paul Nicholls popular grey Politologue to land a memorable surprise under a brilliant frontrunning ride from Harry Skelton. Last year saw another shock, with Put the Kettle On showing a tenacious attitude in a blanket finish, with the 8/13f Chacun Pour Soi weakening tamely up the hill.
The cross country chase run in the middle of the track is usually a light betting heat, but 2020 saw a high class renewal as the progressive Easyisland turned over the 8-11f Tiger Roll. Those placings were completely reversed in 2021, with Gordon Elliott’s old warrior cruising round on the bridle to rout the field. Both are sure to be back in 2022 for a cracking rematch.
The concluding race on Wednesday is always one of the most ferocious betting heats of the week, as the huge reputations of some very expensive youngsters from Britain and Ireland clash in the Champion bumper. Stakes are best kept to a minimum, but this Grade 1 flat race always produces tens of future winners over hurdles next season and is very much a contest to watch over and over again to learn for the future.
