Cheltenham Gold Cup Day 4 Tips & Schedules

Cheltenham Gold Cup Day Tips 2025, Friday 18th March, Day 4 Schedule

Cheltenham Festival Day 4 Video Preview

Triumph Hurdle Odds & Tips

Race 1, Friday 18th March 1:30

A fascinating juvenile hurdle to begin Friday at the Festival, with the best young hurdlers from Britain and Ireland locking horns over two miles and a huge betting heat (both ante-post and on the day). Usually a big field is expected and luck in running required, although the Fred Winter handicap for juveniles has rather diluted competitiveness and only 9 runners went to post in 2018 (where Apples Shakira was sent off the shortest priced favourite in the history of the race).

2019 saw Pentland Hills impressively spring a 20/1 shock for Nicky Henderson, and there was another shock for punters who piled into Gary Moore’s Goshen in 2020 as the well backed favourite departed at the last when in complete command (leaving Burning Victory to scramble home at 12/1 for Willie Mullins). In 2021 the dominance of Henry de Bromhead and Rachael Balckmore continued unchallenged, as the well backed Quilixios made all the running to win in terrific style.

County Hurdle Preview & Betting

Race 2, Friday 18th March 2:10

A fiercely competitive Grade 3 handicap over two miles, always attracting a maximum field and the layers offering “12/1 the field” at this stage of proceedings. Dan Skelton is very much the man to follow in this contest in recent years, winning with Superb Story in 2016, Moyaayed in 2018 and memorably with the stable favourite Ch’tibello in 2019 (landing quite a touch for his astute connections).

In 2020 the punters were in charge as the well backed 11/2f landing a hefty gamble on the day for the powerful Willie Mullins and Barry Geraghty combination. In 2021 the bookmakers got a real “skinner”, when the unconsidered 33/1 chance Belfast Banter edged home in a blanket finish for the Irish trainer Peter Fahey.

Albert Bartlett Novices Hurdle Tips & Odds

Race 3, Friday 18th March 2:50

A three mile Grade 1 novice hurdle that provides a stern test of stamina for novices, and it has duly provided shocks in its short history, with three winners at 33/1 and the 2019 victor Minella Indo sent off an unfancied 50-1 chance to the delight of bookmakers (race run in really deep ground and plenty simply did not handle the extreme conditions on the day).

As usual the 2022 renewal has an open look to it, with ante-post betting light as a result, and the running plans are likely to get a lot clearer closer to the week of the Festival (with numerous top yards having multiple entries across the four days in various races).

Cheltenham Gold Cup Betting & Tips

Race 4, Friday 18th March 3:30

The highlight of Friday and indeed the entire four days at the festival, with top class staying chasers locking horns to attempt to take the Blue Riband of the NH game. There have been some legendary winners of the prize over the years, with Dawn Run, Desert Orchid, Best Mate, Kauto Star and Denman all fresh in the memory of all NH racing fans.

This is always a severe test of stamina given the relentless gallop they go from the tape, and you really do need to stay the 3m2f trip very well, with the final hill often changing the shape of the race dramatically as horses come to the end of their tether. In 2018 Native River managed to make all the running, jumping superbly and finding more up the hill to fend off the quirky Might Bite.

Al Boum Photo became the first horse since Best Mate to win the Gold Cup back to back in 2020, and he is currently a 16/1 chance to come back to win for the third time in 2022 (after a workmanlike win on his seasonal debut at Tramore). The 2021 renewal saw Minella Indo fend off A Plus Tard in a race dominated by Ireland, and both are sure to be back to battle things out again (the latter currently 7/2f despite a short priced defeat at the hands of Galvin over Christmas).

Foxhunters Chase Preview & Tips

Race 5, Friday 18th March 4:10

A very light betting heat, with the crowd still recovering from the excitement of the preceding Gold Cup, but nonetheless a terrific race to watch, with top class hunter chasers and their enthusiastic riders always going off hard in a huge field of varying abilities.

The 3m2f course again provides a stern test for both horse and rider, and the complexion frequently can change dramatically up the hill as they get racing for home a long way out.

Mrs Paddy Power Mares’ Chase Preview & Tips

Race 6, Friday 18th March 4:50

A new addition to the Cheltenham Festival in 2021, with a Grade 2 Mares Chase over 2m4f designed to attract entries from the top yards in Britain and Ireland. The stated aim of the BHA is to encourage mares to stay in training and as such this move is broadly welcomed by trainers on both sides of the channel.

As a betting medium it is unlikely to fire the imagination of punters, with a small field likely and the top yards dominating (with the quality likely to be diluted with another option available to avoid high class rivals). In 2021 Willie Mullins mare Coolreevy won the inaugural running under Paul Townend, and the yard is sure to have a very strong hand in the 2022 renewal.

Martin Pipe Handicap Hurdle Preview & Odds

Race 7, Friday 18th March 5:30

Another really competitive handicap hurdle to round off the week, with a maximum field of useful handicappers lining up and a chance for their young conditional jockeys to make a real name for themselves on the big stage.

This 2m4f handicap has seen some inspired gambles over the years, with unexposed plots laid out to peak on the big day, and Jonjo O’Neill’s Early Doors certainly did plenty of damage when backed into 5/1 from 12/1 on the day before winning in 2019 (owned by the big punter JP McManus). In 2021 Willie Mullins secured the trainers title for the week when his Galopin des Champs landed the prize at 8/1, fending off Dan Skelton’s Langer Dan in a terrific finish up the hill.

Cheltenham 2025 Gold Cup Day

The final day of the festival, and all centred around the highlight of the entire four days in the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup (new sponsor announced for 2022). This is the biggest race of the entire NH season (surpassed only by the Aintree Grand National in terms of public appreciation), and is the Blue Riband for steeplechasers. Run over the stamina sapping 3m 2 1/2f trip, this is the supreme test for Grade 1 chasers, run at a brutal gallop most years and always fiercely contested by household names in Britain and Ireland.

There have been some memorable winners over the years, with Dawn Run, Desert Orchid, Denman, Kauto Star all firmly etched in the memory of all racing fans in recent history. In 2019 Al Boum Photo ran out a very game winner for Willie Mullins and Paul Townend, showing a terrific attitude under pressure to get the better of Annibale Fly and Bristol du Mai. The form had a substandard look on the day and that view has been born out by subsequent performances of some of the principals. The winner came back in 2020 to land the spoils under a brilliant ride, overcoming some trouble in running and always just doing enough up the hill in a tight finish.

In 2021 Minella Indo proved a very game winner for Henry de Bromhead, given a superb ride by Jack Kennedy in a thrilling finish up the hill .

While most of the betting action centres around the big race at 3.30pm, the rest of the card is chock full of high quality graded action. The Triumph hurdle gets things underway at 1.30pm, with a huge field of juvenile hurdlers from both Britain and Ireland putting their vaunted reputations to the test in a cavalry charge (luck in running always plays a big part). In 2019 Nicky Henderson’s Pentland Hills sprang a 20-1 surprise, confidently cruising through from well off a strong early pace, while in 2020 there was a shock blow for punters as the well backed Goshen fell at the final hurdle when some 15l clear of toiling rivals (leaving the lucky Burning Victory to come home in front in the most unlikely of circumstances).

The Irish look set to dominate proceedings in 2022 with their juvenile form seemingly far stronger than the best the UK trainers can muster.

The Albert Bartlett at 2.50pm is a popular race for novices on the final day that has produced some really competitive races, with the three mile trip a proper test of stamina for young horses at the start of their careers. 2018 saw a heavy ground slog with a 33/1 shock in Kilbricken Storm, and there was another boilover for the layers in 2019 when the unconsidered 50/1 chance Minella Indo took the prize back to Ireland (before going on to land the Gold Cup in 2021). Punters restored some balance with the well backed Monkfish landing the spoils in the blanket finish up the hill in 2020, and he has since proven himself as a top level novice chaser over fences.

Vanillier proved a game winner from the front in 2021 for Gavin Cromwell, and the 2022 renewal has a wide open look to things at this stage.

A competitive handicap now rounds off the meeting, with the Martin Pipe handicap hurdle a perilously difficult “getting out” stakes on the day (with the layers usually offering at least 10/1 the field and a maximum field size assured/luck in running playing a huge part). This changed running order is not without controversy, with plenty of purists preferring the old Grand Annual 2m handicap chase as the closing race, and there is little doubt that the quality does peter out after the big race at 3.30pm
